  • Another important milestone in building a nationwide hydrogen infrastructure in Germany
  • Second H2 filling station on a motorway rest station in Germany

Berlin/Bad Rappenau, 16 October 2017 – Today, Air Liquide celebrated the official opening of its hydrogen filling station in the Heilbronn district of Bad Rappenau, which has been in operation since June, attended by Norbert Barthle, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI).

The Air Liquide filling station is situated directly on the A6 motorway at a 24-TOTAL service station (‘24-Autohof’) and is second H2 filling station on a motorway in Germany. It has a daily capacity of 200 kg of hydrogen and can fuel up to 40 fuel-cell vehicles per day. The refuelling process takes only three to five minutes. After refuelling, the average range of the vehicles is 500 km. The Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure is subsidising the construction and operation of the H2 filling station on Buchäckerring with around EUR 900,000.

The new H2 station in Bad Rappenau is one of the 50 first hydrogen filling stations to be built in Germany as part of the Clean Energy Partnership (CEP) and subsidised by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure via its National Innovation Programme for Hydrogen and Fuel-cell Technology (NIP). The expansion of the nationwide H2 network is progressing well, with several sites officially opening in October: on 16 October, the H2 filling stations in Bad Rappenau and Bremen, on 17 October the inauguration of the Cologne/Bonn site, and on 18 October the CEP partners are opening a H2 filling station in Munich. This brings the total number of filling stations in the German H2 network to 41.

Norbert Barthle, Parliamentary Undersecretary of State at the Federal Minister of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, says: “Zero-emissions electric drives are the future. Hydrogen cars are an important alternative to conventional combustion engines. The Federal Ministry of Transport is supporting the development of a broad H2 refuelling infrastructure to give drivers the confidence that they can refuel at any time. Every new hydrogen station takes us one step further. That’s why I’m particularly pleased with the new hydrogen filling station in Bad Rappenau.”

Gert Klaiber, Undersecretary at the Ministry of Transport of the State of Baden-Wuerttemberg, said: “The Baden-Wuerttemberg Ministry of Transport welcomes the initiative of the ‘24-Autohof Bad Rappenau’ operators and Air Liquide for setting up a hydrogen filling station on the A6 motorway in Baden-Wuerttemberg. This is an important contribution to expanding the supply infrastructure for alternative drive systems in the road transport sector.”

Hans Heribert Blättgen, Mayor of Bad Rappenau: “I’m delighted that we now have one of the world’s most innovative motorway rest stops in Bad Rappenau with the ‘24-Autohof’. By opening the state-of-the-art hydrogen filling station, ‘24-Autohof’ once again proves its pioneering role in matters of ecological expertise and responsibility.”

Antoine Mazas, Managing Director of the New Energies business unit at Air Liquide Advanced Technologies, commented: “Hydrogen is one of the key solutions for the energy transition which can play an important role in the transition to a clean, low-carbon, energy system. Hydrogen has the potential to efficiently decarbonize the transport sector and needs a dedicated infrastructure to achieve this goal. Air Liquide is delighted to be among the leading companies involved in the building up of the largest European hydrogen network.”

Alexander Ruscheinsky, owner of ‘24-Autohof’ Bad Rappenau and President of Vereinigung Deutscher Autohöfe (Association of German Motorway Service stations – VEDA), said: “Motorway rest-stop SMEs can and want to shape the future, and take a pioneering role in ecological responsibility. The location at a rest-stop is triply efficient for customers and investors, because it covers the motorway in both directions, as well as the surrounding region. The future-proofing package already in place at ‘24-Autohof’ in Bad Rappenau is unique in Europe. With the hydrogen filling station, we complete our mosaic for the mobility of the future.”

Thomas Strauß, Service Station Director of TOTAL Deutschland GmbH, said: “TOTAL Deutschland has been continuously present in Germany with hydrogen filling stations for 15 years. Together with our H2 Mobility partners Air Liquide, Daimler, Linde, OMV and Shell, we are now pursuing the expansion of the nationwide network so as to enable a nationwide market launch of hydrogen vehicles. It is particularly pleasing that our partners in the motorway rest-stop business, such as 24-Autobahn-Raststätten GmbH, are also promoting hydrogen mobility on German motorways with their efforts.”
